A route four PMV driver at the centre of a viral video that shocked the nation has been arrested and is now in police custody, the NCD/Central Divisional Command has confirmed.
The footage, widely circulated on social media since Tuesday, June 7, captured a public motor vehicle (PMV) transporting armed individuals who were allegedly involved in a planned attack that caused a traffic collision with a Nissan Navara at Ela Beach. The dramatic scenes, including the moment two PMV buses boxed in the Navara, triggered widespread outrage and immediate calls for police action.
According to police, the suspect was tracked down after days of surveillance. The bus was intercepted by Hohola Police on Friday, July 11. Upon questioning, the driver confessed to being behind the wheel during the incident.
Authorities revealed that the man was driving without a valid license and has since been charged with dangerous driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He has been detained at the Hohola Police Station, where investigations are continuing.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab praised the swift actions of officers involved in the arrest, stating that the incident highlights the importance of community vigilance.
“This arrest would not have been possible without the public sharing the video and working with police. We thank all who assisted,” he said.
Police have also confirmed that further arrests are expected, including passengers and the driver of the second bus, as investigations point toward a coordinated effort in the incident.
The public has reacted strongly to the news. Social media user Erick Bala commented that the arrested driver and his alleged accomplices were “getaway drivers” in a robbery attempt, calling for additional charges to be laid.
Another commenter, Steven T. Thomas, demanded the arrest of the bus owner as well, stating that “a criminal transported criminals with intent to commit crimes. Arrest everyone involved.”
The incident has reignited concerns about unlicensed and unqualified drivers operating PMVs in the city, as well as the larger issue of criminal elements using public transport to commit crimes.
Authorities have assured the public that this arrest is only the beginning, and that law enforcement will continue to pursue all those involved.
